The scrappers are hostile robots constructed from scrap metal and salvaged technology. Containing partial sentience, these piecemeal machines exist around old Earth ruins such as those found in San Francisco. Usually performing rudimentary salvaging tasks, scrappers have recently displayed hints of a higher level of artificial intelligence directing their actions.

Defiance 2050 Game Guide

The animated junk piles known as scrappers often display group behaviors that suggest they are more than singular automatons.

— Defiance 2050 Pursuit: Scrapper Investigation

These rusted, grimy automatons contain a small portion of limited artificial intelligence, a spark of sentience granted by a Votan-made AI reborn on Earth: the Ark-Brain.

— Defiance 2050 Intel: Scrappers

Scrappers and their Arkfalls will be encountered long before they become common to the Story in San Francisco.
